Cannabis, Indian and Japanese Strategies Soar Amidst a Volatile Market

The shortened trading week due to the Labor Day holiday saw light data and low trading volumes.

Despite some positive data, U.S. stocks trended lower for much of the week, amid signs that the economy was starting to cook once again. Weekly initial jobless claims fell and came in at 216,000 for the week ending September 2, one of the lowest readings since the pandemic and showed that businesses were still hiring at a fevered pace. The ISM Services PMI unexpectedly surged to 54.5 in August, marking the strongest growth in the services sector in over six months. August's reading reversed the dip seen in July and also came in higher than the forecasted number of around 52.5. This sent stocks lower due to fears the Fed would keep its pace of interest rate hikes going for the foreseeable future. However, on a bright note, the announcement of an IPO for British chip-maker ARM, with a valuation of $52 billion, kept tech stocks higher on the week.

How to prevent kids from eating ‘Pot Tarts’ and ‘KeefKats’

If you were groggily fumbling to make your child's breakfast in the morning, are you sure you wouldn't mistake a Pot Tart for a Pop Tart? Such child-friendly marijuana edibles were the subject a much-discussed editorial by Stanford Professors Robert MacCoun and Michelle Mello in yesterday's New England Journal of Medicine.  Taking note of cases in which children have required emergency room care after ingesting these newly legal products, MacCoun and Mello call for stronger regulations, including clearer labeling, standardized serving sizes, child-resistant packaging and a cap on the potency of the marijuana in edibles.

Why businesses oppose marijuana legalization in Arizona

To get a job at Woodworkers Source, potential employees must pass a drug test.

There's a good reason for that, said Keith Stephens, owner of the Scottsdale-based lumber-supply business: "Many, many businesses, including mine, have a certain element of risk. In my case it's driving a forklift loaded with heavy material and being in the shop with chop saws," said Stephens, 72, of Paradise Valley.

What to know about Arizona court ruling on marijuana odor, searches

With a pair of opinions published Monday, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that police can still use the odor of marijuana as probable cause to search a car or a premises, despite medical-marijuana laws.

In both cases, one from Tucson and the other from Maricopa County, defendants tried to claim that since the passage of the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act (AMMA) in 2010, law-enforcement officers could no longer assume that a crime was committed based on the mere odor of marijuana.

Indian tribes free to grow pot on their lands – as long as they follow federal laws

American Indian tribes can grow and sell marijuana on their lands as long as they follow the same federal conditions laid out for states that have legalized the drug, the US Justice Department has said.

Oregon US attorney Amanda Marshall said on Thursday the announcement addresses questions raised by tribes about how legalization of pot in states like Oregon, Washington and Colorado would apply to Indian lands.

Djokovic wants to weed out toking tennis fan

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was unnerved by the smell of marijuana smoke on Saturday as he advanced to the final of the ATP Rogers Cup by defeating France's Jeremy Chardy.
During his 6-4, 6-4 victory, Djokovic complained to the umpire about the smell of marijuana smoke. After the match he addressed the issue, which he said had distracted him in a prior match as well.
"Oh my God," Djokovic said. "You can't believe how bad it was. Whoever it is, he's pretty high and I hope he doesn't come back tomorrow. Because it's a pretty bad smell. I didn't enjoy it much."
The Serb said later that the same situation happened to him in a Friday doubles win.

Could Scottsdale see 3 new marijuana dispensaries?

Three medical-marijuana companies are eyeing the Scottsdale Airpark for new dispensary locations as they look to tap into one of Arizona's highest concentrations of patients authorized to use the drug.

Two proposed dispensaries are on the south side of the airport's runways, while a third is planned near the Scottsdale Quarter office and shopping complex, according to city records. The latter has already been approved for a permit, while a City Council vote is likely upcoming for the others.

Medical Marijuana Industry Anticipates High Times As US Loosens Research Restrictions

Is medical marijuana really a medicine? Is it a drug? A dietary supplement? The definition is opaque, both scientifically and politically. But scientists and policymakers took steps this week that will let researchers more closely investigate the drug's potential medical value.

On Monday, the Obama administration banished a longstanding mandatory review of marijuana research proposals by the Public Health Service, effective immediately. Supporters of the decision said the review was merely a needless extra hurdle for scientists, and in some cases those who submitted proposals waited months or years to hear back.

Number of Arizona marijuana initiatives doubles

Second marijuana initiative filed ... The Campaign to Legalize and Regulate Marijuana filed paperwork last week for a competing effort to legalize marijuana, potentially jeopardizing any effort to legalize the drug in 2016.

Like the first initiative, the group seeks to let adults carry up to an ounce of marijuana and proposes a 15 percent tax to help fund public education. However, those who carry more than 8 ounces of marijuana could be slapped with a misdemeanor, as opposed to a felony, as the first initiative proposes.
